The Blisworth tunnel is the most impressive engineering achievement of this stretch of the canal: 2,812m in length and the second longest navigable tunnel in the British canal system today. This stretch of the Grand Junction Canal linking the midlands to London was the last to be built. Work began on the tunnel in 1793 but was beset with geological problems. For several years the Blisworth to Northampton route was augmented with a toll-road and tramway. The tunnel eventually opened in 1805.
